Recognized Law Enforcement Agency

On March 1, 2018, the Melissa Police Department received the award of "Re-Recognition Status" from the Texas Police Chiefs Association Law Enforcement Recognition Program.

The Recognition Program began in 2007 and evaluates a police department's compliance with over 160 Best Business Practices for Texas Law Enforcement. Texas Law Enforcement professionals carefully developed these Best Practices to assist agencies in the efficient and effective delivery of service, the reduction of risk, and the protection of individual rights. While similar in nature to the national accreditation program, the Best Practices Recognition Program is easier to administer, lower in cost, and is designed specifically for Texas Law Enforcement Agencies.

Status

There are more than 2,400 police agencies in Texas that can earn something called "Recognized Status." Melissa first earned this status in 2014 and was the 92nd agency to do so, putting it in the top 5% of all agencies in the state. To keep this recognition, police departments have to show they’re still meeting the rules every four years. The Melissa Police Department did this and was re-recognized on March 1, 2018. The award was officially given at the Melissa City Council Meeting on April 10, 2018.

Review

The Melissa Police Department chose to subject itself to a careful review of the following for many reasons, but the most important reason is the commitment to keep the City of Melissa one of the safest cities in Collin County:

This process gave an outside group a chance to check how the Police Department is doing. It helps ensure the people of Melissa know their Police Department is working correctly and using the best practices in law enforcement today.
