What is Identity Theft?Keyboard

Identity theft refers to specific identifying information being used without your consent.  Some examples of commonly used information include: name and date of birth, electronic identifying numbers, routing codes, account numbers, or social security numbers.

How was my information compromised?

There are numerous ways for an identity thief to obtain your information.  Most victims believe they have been jeopardized online.  Although a thief can obtain your information online, information can be stolen much easier through low-tech means such as telephone scams or even un-shredded personal documents you throw away.

What to do if you are a victim of Identity Theft.

In the event that your identity has been jeopardized, follow the steps below:

1) Fill out the affidavit provided by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
2) Compile documentation relating to your compromised identity (i.e. bank
    statements, letter from the IRS, credit bureau reports).  
3) Bring in the affidavit and documentation to the Melissa Police Department
    or call at (972) 838-2033.  A report number will be generated and
    provided to you.
4) The case will be investigated or forwarded onto the proper authority.
5) Upon exhausting all leads, the case will either result in the perpetrator
    being found and charged or the case being closed.
